It was great to be back on the scene of Sci/Art today, felt like I wasn’t even gone. I even stayed caught up on the Look Around You videos. I suppose I could sum up the day talking about responsibility because our day was mainly focused on finishing up our final projects. I’ll try and [...]

In the early hours of Wednesday June 30th, I was not sleeping as most of my classmates. Instead, I was vomiting, possibly the result of food poisoning, but the actual cause was not determined. In the morning, I went to the Ashe Center and was instructed, after a quick examination, not to go to classes and [...] -

Today I think I’d like to focus on structure or sculpture. Romie and Miu talked about molecular nanostructures which I think have amazing potential for future technologies but they are also so well represented in sculpture and art, such as those of Richard Long. While at the Getty Center, I learned a lot about bronze and [...] -

Dr. Jim Gimzewski’s presentation was definitely the most interesting defining part of today; it related to our final project, biowaves (from earlier in the day), and education reform (or unifying art and science again in a less controversial phrasing). Dr. Gimzewski really pushed us to think outside of the box today, to look to the future. [...] -

After a chance to sleep a little extra (in the dorms and on the bus), I started off the day full of excitement, not knowing what the day ahead held in store. Upon arriving to the California ScienCenter (oooh so clever…), I immediately recognized the hanging golden balls from a photograph that my friend took that [...] -

Friday, Day Five, began as a somewhat stressful day, but ended up being an inspirational idea focused on collaboration among people. John Carpenter presented in the morning, displaying his inspirations and works combining science and art, emphasizing how important it was to have worked with such great people. His enthusiasm really left a mark on me, [...] -

Our assignment from the optical properties lecture led me to quite some interesting things. NextNature has quite a few interesting ideas including really innovative furniture like beds and a mechanical flower that imitates bioluminescent properties, but alas wasn’t a real species. Another search turned up Avatar images. I do admit that the bioluminescent species in the movie [...] -

Day 3, a day of biological processes and amazing images; my type of day. Miu and Romie’s lecture on patterns in nature intrigued me because of the products that are being created based on natural systems. Some of my favorite things to look at are pieces of furniture that mimic bone because people have designed computer [...] -

Today was our second day at the Art Sci Nanolab and we had our first ever lab visits in addition to lecturing; these were the first labs I’d ever visited at least. They kind of broke the stereotypes of labs that I expected of a lab. It was really nice to see scientists that were so [...] -

Carbon nanotubes and Buckminster Fuller are definitely main inspirations for me from the nanotechnological aspect of today’s lecture. I think it would be fascinating to see what these tubes, even though they’re really small, could be used for, whether its “elevator to space” cables or used in materials for industrial buildings or interior design. These macro [...] -
